Hi all,

I have bought a r50 pathfinder TI with the factory installed 'fashion rails' but would like to install a rooftop tent as summer is kicking into gear here (Australia) and it would be bloody awesome to have a nice setup for the summer.

The problem I have though is that I understand the factory rails wont be strong enough to support a rooftop tent setup but I can't figure out how to remove them (Do i need to remove the headlining?) And if I do remove them will i need to purchase some sort of track system to mount a sturdy rack to?

I would ideally like to mount this (https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/products/roof-racks/roof-top-tent-racks-9547.html) to my roof. if anybody has any information it would be greatly appreciated as im stumped!

I have attached pictures of my roof for reference as I understand some models have different roof systems. If you want a broader view or photos of somethign else please just ask!

Cheers!

That's weird. Mine just has crossbars that mount directly to the rails on the roof, and they can slide back and forth and come off just by unscrewing a little piece. Do you have more of a top-down view pic by any chance? I can't tell if you have the same rail system my rig does directly on the roof.

I can't take any photos right now as its dark here at the moment. but from what I can gather if I remove these rails il be left with a black rail that sits flush with the roof of the car with a small non-standard track running next to it. Another problem though is that theres no obvious way to remove them and I can't find much information about this arrangement online hence the confusion.

If this helps it looks like the attached image at the moment but the dillema I am having is that this setup (according to manual) won't support the setup I am looking at.

So I ended up taking the headlining off and revealing some bolts that bolted into the rail, the track system that came with some pathfinders fits onto it so that was easy enough!

Figured I would post this here so if anybody had a similar problem they could find an answer here!

GSpeed151 runs an RTT on his QX4 for about a year. I believe he bolted it to the load bars & has had no problems. You might ask him.

Yep, He/she has the setup i was looking for and have installed now (on a cage not on load bars). I just had those stupid fashion rails in the way!

I run a Thule square bar set up, I am in process of building a full rack from this material called UNIISTRUT its like a big erector set that bolts together-no welding http://www.unistrut.us/ so I can mount lights, awning and other accessories

I am building it like a basket rack when I am not running my RTT, its lower to the roofline then the Thule or Yakima systems and cost effective then going with a high end rack like Baja or Gobi.

Is that mounted on the OEM track mounting system, or did you some aftermarket tracks for the setup? i have the OEM tracks i found at the wreckers on and they seem to be creaking. Just wondering if that is because I installed it to loose or the weight is to much for the OEM tracks. Cheers.
