4WD warning light

Good day to all.

Was driving peacefully down the road in my 2004 pathfinder at about 90KM/h when the 4WD warning light came on in the dash. Car quickly shuddered and it felt like it had gone into 4WD mode. The center lights "shift indicator lamp" all went out. I slowed down to 70KM/h. and struggled to complete my journey home.

Came to a stop light, and the beast stalled. I tried to restart a few times, and finally got it going after waiting 5 minutes or so.

 

I do not have a consult-II unit, so I went the self-diagnostic mode found in the TF section page 62.

Followed the example, and after the last step, looked at the lamp to see what code it would provide. It simply flashed every 2.5 seconds.

 

If I read the example properly, it should have given me a 2.5 flash, followed by a 1 second pause, and then an appropriate number of .5 second flashes, the number of which would correspond to the page 63 malfunction sheet.

 

Seems like it did not have a code stored.

 

Anyone experience this error?

 

One additional detail is that the ABS light is on and that the abs system has not worked for at least 5 years.

were you using the cruse control? this has happened to me on the highway using cruse. shuddered and then everything went dead. turned out to be a bad speed sensor unit. located on the transmission.

No I was not on cruise.

Strange thing is that if the 4wd warning light went on, it should have registered a malfunction, but nothing has showed up in the self-diagnostic test.

 

Took it this morning to a local garage that has diagnostic tools, and first thing I was told was that since the check engine light was not lit, there would probably not be anything available as malfunction.

 

Left it there for investigation.

Aren't transmission codes stored in a different way than OBD codes?

May be true, but I have no idea.

 

Only thing I see in common is that Nissan uses a "Consult-II" to analyse this issue, and they use the same device to analyse engine troubles. In any case, TP-62 tells you how to self diagnose with the corresponding error conditions on TP-63. Nothing came through when I did the diagnostic. Did it 3 times about 30 minutes apart to make sure that I was not messing up the steps, same result.

 

Beginning to think that it happened in a dream.

There is apparently a way to read transmission codes by switching our ECM to a diagnostic mode and counting the flashes of your O/D indicator. I'll see if I can find the procedure for you
