I just replaced my timing belt, and I might have put it on too tight.

I might just be paranoid but since doing my timing belt on my 89, my engine makes a loud almost whistling/whirring type of noise that follows rpm. It's much better than the loud rattle I had from the previous, very loose belt. I used the twist method of tensioning it described in one of the threads in the garage because I was in a hurry at that point. I'm going to figure a way to recheck the tension using the 22lbs method in the FSM but probably not for a day or two. I've put about 60 miles on the new belt so far with no change in noise, but it runs great besides that. If the belt is too tight, how safe is it to keep driving it so say, 100 miles before I check it? I plan on re torquing the crank bolt and probably checking the new water pump seal for leaks anyways.

On another note, it's possible I put one or two of the old drive belts on backwards which I know can make noise, so I'm going to replace all of them and see if it changes. They're in good shape but I don't know how old they are.

Each timing belt I've done on my pathfinders and hardbody made a whirring noise after I closed everything up. I used the twist method too and even tried tightening and loosening the belt slightly on my old pathfinder and honestly I just summed it up to being a cheap (ie not a gates brand) belt. An 89 has a square tooth belt, are you sure you got the proper belt, if not it'll more than likely make noise too.

As for driving it for 100 miles its a 50/50 chance. It could break today or next Wednesday. The sooner you check it the better.

In my experiences though I put around 15k miles on the last belt and it always made noise, so your mileage may vary.

Either way make sure you double check everything though because if the belt breaks you're going to be dealing with several bent valves. In my unfinished 87 I had to replace all of the valves due to the previous owners neglect and pure lack of care.

Oh and for the drive belts I don't think them being on one way or another would make any difference, if they're old I'd replace them anyways.

Mine makes a weird rubbing noise at about 750-800 rpm so I bumped the idle up to about 850 and it's nice and quiet now. I can only hear it as I let the clutch out taking off. Still dont know what causes is but I'm not too worried anymore.

The two ways I do t-belts is with the tensioner some what loose I rotate the belt 180 degrees in between the cams. The other way is the tensioner adjuster bolt hole is at 25 after. Too tight and the cams will snap-too loose the belt will jump
