BOILING !

Hi all,

2005 R50 - pretty stock apart from 16x8 rims. Getting out of the car last couple of weeks i can hear a boiling noise under the hood, its the overflow tank and i can see it boiling quite violently. The temp gauge always reads normal, the car is hot under the hood but then again, its a hot climate here. Is this normal ? haven't changed the coolant for years probably. i will remove the thermostat and run the engine without it, we've done 265,000km so maybe its time to change thermostat and radiator. Not so easy to swap out parts over here in Fiji as they are not available off the shelf - i have to import them.

Any thoughts would be appreciated !

just had a look, water in Rad isn't great looking, seems discoloured and not in a nice "coolant" way. Will also check radiator cap. Judging by the replies, i assume the boiling over flow tank is not normal. This is my favourite vehicle by far and it drives a 500km round trip along the coast and mountains on some twisty demanding roads three times a week, so for a Christmas present i think i'll just change out rad cap/ thermostat / radiator. Just did all wheel bearings and an oil change yesterday.

Antifreeze is supposed to raise the boiling point as well, so it might just be time to flush the cooling system. A new radiator cap is also a good idea.

New rad/thermostat couldn't hurt I guess but if the engine's not overheating, I doubt either is the source of the issue.

i agree slartibartfast, its not overheating so i don't think the thermostat is to blame, won't hurt to change it though. At this stage I'm going to flush and clean the system and radiator, change the thermostat, refill and run and see what happens. i was going to go through the entire truck soon, new suspension with 2 inch lift, new interior carpets etc, etc . I might as well start with the engine bay and get it all running sweetly there before i tackle the rest of it.

to cap this post, turned out my coolant was pretty shot and although you couldn't tell, the radiator was quite blocked ! ordering a new rad and will change coolant and thermostat and should be all good !
