Rear Bumper/Tire Swing pics for WD21

Looking into building a rear bumper and tire swing. The bumper is easy. But I still don't know how I am going to pivot the tire swing off the rear bumper. I wanna get some ideas. Post your pics. Anything helps!

On the WD21s they hinge on the RR corner. If yours didn't come with one there is a thread on how to install a stock carrier. I believe they all have the mounting locations peened on the inside of the panel (from the inside). The hinge nor the latch actually contact the bumper at all. Here is a pic of mine after I installed a tube bumper and it didn't affect the tire carrier at all.

Negative, non-factor carrier trucks have no markings or bracing in the quarter panel for one to be added. You have to either buy a set of scavenge a set from a donor (as someone who scavenged, I suggest just buying). Where the plates above the bumper mount are there though.

 

Sorry OP, I added a stock carrier and currently have no rear bumper as my 93-95 one fell off :lol:

Actually there are markings on the lower portion where the brackets that hold the carrier would go. When I added a carrier, there were little divits to mark where to drill but only for the lower brackets. If I remember correctly, there were also spot welded nuts just under the sheet metal to bolt the lower brackets to as well. The carrier itself has no factory reinforcement behind the sheet metal where the hinges attach though. My truck was not marked for where to drill for the hinges so make sure you locate those carefully.

 

For the reinforcements I cut some 3/16 inch plate steel and got creative with a torch and a ball peen hammer to create the slight contour of the area and then drilled the appropriate holes to line it all up.

Also replaced the hinge bushings while I was at it and it has worked great with no body deformation carrying my spare 33x12.5 for years now without issue.

These are just a couple of links. Most of the DIY builder's parts website will have something. I've got the stock carrier but am going to change to one of the heavy duty spindle bearing parts like the ones in the links, but will keep the OEM latch and make a mount so that I can retain it. I think the OEM latch is as fine, as it locks like a door latch. The leak part of the OEM carrier are the bushings in the hinge, and was never designed to hold anything more than the stock spare or maybe up to a 31" tire.

Yes I would also like to know what flares those are... i need them!

its a rubber moulding that's screwed or pop riveted on . ya buy it off a roll by the meter. $50nz. dose the hole truck it comes in 50mm or 75mm wide cheers.

Was going to build a tire carrier from scratch, but decided to try a different route using a set of Energy Suspension bushings, (under $20), some DOM and flat bar. Retained the OEM mounting bracket and carrier.

 

SO far it seems to be working fairly well. Nice tight firm feel to it, and no more dreaded OEM bushing rattle.

It was the right price and not overly difficult to fab once I figured out the final design. Not sure how well the poly bushings will hold up but they do absorb a lot of the vibration that was the root cause of the OEM pin and bushing wear. Once the OEM pin and bushings wore a bit, there's play in the hinge and that was the source of that dreaded (metal to metal) rattle that I think all wd21 owners have experienced (given they're all at least 20 years old or more now).

 

I added grease fittings and still need to fabricate the "stop" to hold the carrier open on uneven surfaces.

That rattle is terrible...I repaired mine as well, but it involved drilling out the original (worn out) pins and replacing with new.

Now it would be much better to do what you did...easier to work on, and parts are available...(had to wait quite some time for the factory pins.)

Rob probably coulda got em for me faster haha.

As part of the retrofit for the R50 carriers on my and a buddy's trucks, I replaced the OE hinge pins with a 5/8" bolt and used 1/8" nylon washers between the hinge brackets and carrier frame. This a produced a very good adjustable compression to control the swing...and super silent. OE pin is a 16mm shoulder-style pin with a 14mm end IIRC, so I just bored out the lower holes to get the bolt through.

 

I like the idea of the poly bushing, but I does it allow for excess motion? What sort of tension adjustment does the WD21 carrier have?

Hawa has a good point. I would be curious to know how much movement occurs with the poly bushings...however you could always install the stiffer Energy bushings in place should you need them to be more "solid."

Doesn't change the fact that it is a wicked cool mod!
