Zombie outbreak response vehicle

This thread is a result of the "what do you always have with you" thread that escalated to epic proportions and got derailed. Hence this thread is being created to bring the other back on track and set your creativity free in this one.

So let's hear/see what you would do to your pathfinder to survive a zombie apocalypse. What would you pack?

Which modifications would you do to make it more survivable?

As much as I like the show the Walking Dead, I hate that they usually just drive a Hyunday elantra.

Hahah in Dawn of the Dead, they don't swim, but they walked on the ocean floor lol. I hope they can't run like they do in World War Z!

I think I would definitely mount a dozer blade or plough to the front of the vehicle to get through hordes.

Make the front bumper actually protect the radiator. Dual batteries just in case. Add a flamethrower to the front end just in case someone tries to carjack me, and a heavy something under the back on a quick release in case someone in another vehicle tries to chase me down. A tank trap sort of thing that would spring open and lock wouldn't be that tough to weld up. Maybe a fuel cell in the back that dumps into the main tank as a reserve. Maybe get around to lifting the front end a little. A CB and a better air compressor would probably be helpful as well. Some kind of electric water pump and reservoir would be quite helpful as well... drive down to the river, fill the tank, drive it back to the house, pump it back out to irrigate vegetables, put out fires, or just fill the toilet tanks.

A winch could be a helpful as well.

Other than that, keep it looking as stock as possible so it's not eye-catching. Bars on the windows aren't a bad idea, but I hear it's quite difficult to break a car window, and the "look at me I probably have supplies" factor might not be worth it. If things get bad enough to need more protection, remove the sunroof, beat a piece of steel into a sunroof shape, cut a hole through it on the passenger's side, weld a lazy susan bearing to it, and make a turret on top of that for the passenger to shoot from. The bottom of a propane tank armored with steel plate should do the trick.

Bring a tool kit, assortment of weapons (blades don't need reloading), water and food hidden in the quarter panels behind the cargo area trim, spare fluids, and maybe a bicycle in case something goes horribly awry (beats running). Avoid population centers for a few weeks until the mobs die down, then head in for canned goods and precious juice.

Mad Max getup optional.

I think the living would be a grater threat than the dead so I would definitely fortify the PF. Bars on windows, cover the windshield with sheet metal except for a small strip along the centre. Don't wanna have them walkers break through the windshield when you plough through them.

The vehicle should definitely be off-road capable so you can go where others can't.

Um, ok. Cops around here would be pulling that thing over all the time. Only zombie mod I've done to the 96 so far is added a ZORT spare tire cover. Future plans are for just enough lift to fit the near new 285/70/17 Terra Grapplers on Titan wheels, skidplates, bumpers, ample lighting, possibly a winch. When the zombie apocalypse becomes eminent, I'll add extra radiator protection, auxiliary fuel tank, a roof mounted swivel so my passenger/gunner can take care of certain issues by simply popping up through the sunroof, military style blackout lighting.

Tbh if there really was a zombie outbreak it would be a great idea to hole up in a big factory that has barbwire fence all around the perimeter. I know a great warehouse near me that is just that, also has CCTV and IR night cams, 80 water bottles stored in the warehouse that are 11 litres each so there's 880 litres of drinking water. Has a ladder going up to the roof, handy for sniping walkers. There is even a shower/bathroom and many offices that can be converted into bedroom arrangements because there is lots of foam layers in the warehouse that can be used for bedding. There is also lots of vending machines that can be used for energy rations. There is also kitchen with coffee machine with heaps of coffee beans.

So if it were announced that the zombies were coming, I'd go straight there and wait it out. I read once that if there really was a zombie outbreak it would be all over in a couple of weeks. Those zombies walking around outside in the sun and weather conditions would eventually die off from attack by flies. Zombies usually have open cut wounds which would get infected by disease and flies. Eventually they would be rotting away from it and hopefully most people would be smart and barracade themselves inside, effectively cutting off their food supply. The military would deal the most damage to them, killing the majority.

That depends on the origin story of the zombies and how ambitious the makeup department is. The Max Brooks zombies (guy who wrote World War Z) go through some kind of viral re-working, leaving them with no circulatory system to bleed out and flesh that's toxic enough to repel almost anything, and so holds up indefinitely; loss of muscle would still mean loss of motion, though. The ones in Zombieland seem to retain human physiology, just with some kind of brain disease, so a wound that would expose bone would probably cause enough bleeding or infection to kill them off, or at least hobble them so they starve. The same goes for the 28 Days Later and Shawn of the Dead zombies as well. If the origin story involves ancient curses or some such crap (Pirates of the Caribbean), then walking skeletons are possible.

I'm not a comic book guy either, just spent way too much time watching zombie movies (and writing zombie fiction involving my friends). There are some weird ones out there. I'm not sure how Peter Jackson got the job on Lord of the Rings after doing Dead Alive. That lawnmower scene...

Good questions. Obviously zombies and reality don't exactly match, so like Slartibartfast said, it all depends on the origin story. My favorite and most "realistic" zombies so far would have to be from the Walking Dead series. There are plenty of walkers that are "dying" or very slowly starving and decomposing. But they remain undead (to not say alive) until the brain is destroyed. Some have plants and moss growing on them like one of those found at the bottom of a tree. They weaken if they don't eat but the process is very slow.

If the theory about flies and bugs eating them were true, which it very well might be, then we would probably experience a mass surge of sh*tflies infected with the virus (if the virus carries cross species).

But I would agree that the military would be able to destroy the vast majority of the infected. The weaponry and tactical advantage over a target so easy to spot and so slow to move is just too damn big. Even if bullets became a shortage, these things can be run over by the armoured units.

There would have to be a massive internal outbreak within the military and even then chances of that happening across all the nations bases is very unlikely. Besides everyone's got their issued CBRN equipment so that in the event of an outbreak it would quickly be quarantined.

Terranovation does have a pretty good idea though ref the warehouse. Much like the prison at which the gang of the WD is hiding out in. While that makes a lot of sense, I think it would be fun to drive around, find the nicest biggest mansion of some dead rich guy and take it over, fortify it, and wait out the outbreak. Take my awesome zombie Pathfinder and go on supply runs and kill some walkers along the way.
