Yeah I already replaced one of the u-bolts with a shorter one I had laying around. The other one will either get trimmed or I'll buy a shorter one. Grinding might not allow for the nut to slide off easily. I dunno, never done it.

Electrical project shananigans continue. I found some LED strips on sale, so why not brighten up the trunk a bit?! :)

Kyle,

Thanks!

1- yes that is a Deutsch connector. I have some left overs from lights so they were already wired up. I just had to crimp the cable ends onto the usual end connectors, not sure what their technical term is but you find them in any hardware store. Those clamps that fit snuggle fit over the prongs of the power outlet.

2- AFAIK I'm the 3rd guy now to retrofit a carrier since Hawairish. I wasn't REALLY planning on doing this mod, but when I saw a carrier in great shape at the JY, and only cost $40 I couldn't resist.

3- I still have the killer custom one. It just needs a better hinge and latch system. Also it is extremely heavy. From the side profile I always thought it looked funny because of the gap between the tire and the trunk where there is literally nothing. Although i preferred the look of it from behind. The tire being angle and sitting much higher just looks awesome. I was thinking I might still use it when I got on trips where I need to carry Jerry cans.

4- I thought of an angled mount but don't think it would work or look good where it sits low and up against the flat part of the trunk. But I thought about moving it up a bit higher on the mount to give it a bit better departure angle and it would look better IMO. Would be easy to do too. Just drill 4 holes in the mount that actually holds the tire and move it up an few cm. Although you would get close to the edge of the material which might fail. So an extension may need to be welded on if I go that route.

5- There actually is plenty of room for the light guards. One close up pic looks tight because there is a roll of electrical tape between the carrier and guard that I used as spacer to situate the carrier. Like you see I too have the plastic guards on and like I said, no problem with the light guards.

1. Slide terminals.

2. I think it's just us and duke90 that have used the rivnut approach. There was a guy last year who did a retrofit, but he only bent up some steel plates and tried to wedge them back there behind the taillight. IIRC, he eventually sold everything off.

4. There's only about maybe 1" room to move the carrier mount up on the carrier frame...not enough to make a difference. You'd probably have to see about cutting the carrier mount and welding in extensions, as you mentioned.

5. If you don't plan on using the plastic hinge covers, that'll free up some space. Definitely won't fit my setup because of the hinge bolts I used. But Kyle, if you still want to try it, I still have the guards.

Since I have that extra power supply and that OE spot for a power outlet that I missed, I had the urge to do something with it. I had a left over wiring harness for aux lights so I used that with a switch I had laying around and started fiddling around. Now I have an awesome lit up trunk that gets light with the push of a button without draining the main battery and without switching off after 3 minutes (or whatever the factory setting is).

And just a pic from today. Yes my Pathy leaves the garage sometimes lol.

Yeah I gave LED's inside the OE housings too and it helps but this is a hole other level of bright.

Went for a bit of a drive today, a little hike and played with the Gaia App.

Here some pics

Finally got around to making my own missing link like I had intended for a while but kept forgetting about. Making these is so easy I won't insult anyone's intelligence in how to make your own lol

And one more bulb change in my gauge cluster lol. 3rd time's a charm, white LED's this time. Might look a bit bluish in the photo but it is pure white. Luckily this is a very easy job and takes no more than 5 minutes.

So if the mood strikes me, there is no guarantee that it won't go back to red someday lol.

Decided to play around with some left over LEDs I had. Now I have 2 separate lights in my overhead console. One button will turn on night time map lights (red) and the other button will turn on the LED strip I added. Now I got some serious light in this truck!

  • 3 weeks later...

Installed hood louvers over the weekend. Due to the wet moderate climate that I live in, I decided to place the louvers off to the sides where no electrical components were getting rained on. I also didn't cut the entire surface area out, rather drilled vent holes in spots that don't expose sensitive parts.

Why did you add the louvers? Were you having heat issues while crawling? Love the interior light setup.

With all this time spent on the pathy, I'll bet the poor S4 is getting jealous. I've always felt strongly towards those, kind of like having a crush on the crazy pyscho, but incredibly hot girl in high school. Fun for a night, but she will eat you alive if you try to stick with her ;)

Haha yeah the poor S4 has been super neglected. It's stored for the winter right now anyway though. But it hasn't received any new goodies or TLC at all in a while.

I added the louvers purely for looks to be honest. Then when I installed the cold air intake which really is a hot air intake I figured louvers can help keep it a bit cooler in the summer.

That thing looks so ridiculously good that I almost want to give up working on mine because it'll never look that cool

Let it be your inspiration for your...there isn't much you can do to pathfinders (when compared to all the aftermarket crap for jeeps) so to see an offroad pathfinder is awesome...there are tons of r50's out there...how many of them look like this which is why I didn't buy the jeep my heart was so dead set on getting before I found Betsy!

Hmmm...I was kidding with the V8, but let's pursue this idea for a minute shall we?! Hypocritically speaking, are there are any known V8's that would fit? Would it need to be Nissan? And just to be clear, it would pretty much require the entire engine bay and power train to be stripped out, right?!

Yeah that's waaaaaay too much work lol. Funny thing how his story ended, parted it out and bought an S4!! :) so I can skip those steps, keep my Pathy and enjoy the V8 in my S4 :)
