Fuel sender question, my 90 sentra

So my 90 sentra the fuel gauge will work when I fill it, it will show full, but 10 minutes later it will show 1/2 or below the "E", sometimes when I'm getting low on gas it will be towards the low end of the gauge like it's working. I pulled the sender/fuel pump out one time and cleaned the contacts I also checked the ohms but don't recall what reading I got at the time.

 

Think it's just time for a new one, which sucks cause I only see them from the dealer or used if you can find one in a junkyard, the gauge itself should be fine, as the temp gauge and fuel gauge work off the same voltage regulator and the temp gauge works fine.

 

Any other ideas or things to check?

Have you tried running 20oz bottles of Techron thru 2 back-to-back gas tanks?

no, tried accelerating and nailing the brake to see if it frees up the sender, doesn't work

Same thing is going on in my Pathfinder. Just need to replace the sender unit. it is a friction based contact for the sender so after time they do wear out.
