Help! I've killed my pathy :(

Hi guys

I'm new to this site but am looking for some helpful information about what I've done to my pathy!

I have a 2006 R51 pathy, it has a DPChip and a couple of other bits and pieces which shouldn't really effect on-road performance.

New year's day we were towing a camper trailer up a hill when it started blowing white smoke, burning oil, running really rough. It had to be towed to a mechanic who has said it has oil in the cylinder and has a cracked piston. He hasn't dismantled the engine yet to inspect the diesel injector(s) or the timing chain. He's told us we need to put in a new engine  very bummed!

I've done a bit of research and think that this may have been caused by a fault in the injector, possible overload of the engine, air-intake or timing. Can anybody confirm this or have any other ideas or suggestions? Does a new engine sound right or am I being ripped off?

I've taken good care of my pathy, regular servicing - has done around 150,000km. I bought it second hand almost 2 years ago. The DP Chip has made great improvement on fuel consumption and power.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's experience or comment

thanks :/

Hey dude, check the turbo charger of your engine, maybe defective. If not defective, maybe can be oil rings pistons, you may have broken one.

How do you know if it's the turbo? because if the turbo snail is wet with oil, the problem is the turbo. But if the turbo is not contaminated with oil, then the problem is with the oil rings pistons, they are broken or worn and that means to repair motor.

Hope can help you...

There's a few topics about diesel engines, and I think all contributions can be good¡¡¡

I have nothing to add as I have no knowledge of the Diesel engines. I would do an Internet search of your area, maybe there is a local nissan enthusiast group, and take it to someone who is very familiar with the quirks of this engine. A second opinion is invaluable. We had a bearing go out on the output shaft of our WRX. First guy said new tranny without opening it up, guy #2, subie specialist, diagnosed it correctly with his ears. 1/4 of the price and we were rolling.

I believe this problem is caused by one of two different things. Option A states that you blew a head gasket, all of those symptoms you described would be indicative of a blown head gasket. A simple compression check will highlight this. Also, if you do have a cracked piston, but not a blown head gasket, then only that one cylinder would show low on compression, all the others would still be high. Your mechanic doesn't need to rip the engine apart to tell you if it's still intact or not. Compression check will tell all.

Option B states that your EGR valve is clogged and this is causing the white smoke and causing to run rough. A friend of mine experienced the same problem on his 2005 Turbo diesel ford F250, it was the EGR valve.

I believe you shouldn't do anything until getting a compression check on every cylinder first. If they all check out, then there's something else going on. A bad broken engine will not hold compression.

Good luck

Just a follow up on what happened with my busted pathy.

we ended up having to replace the engine (yep, ouch!) $7500 later and the new engine is a gazillion times better than the original. There was something wrong with that one from the start. So much happier with the old girl now! thanks everyone for your comments and help though. I didn't refit the chip and would like to sell it if anyone is interested. thanks

Happy you got it going, however i threw up in my mouth a little when you said 7500. I paid 3100 for my whole R50 in 2008.

just noticed this thread was a million years old =(
