01silvapathy
Hey guya, been awhile since I posted anything here but im back with yet another ses light question! So my light came on yesterday and it read as p1440 which apparently can be ALOT of things having to so with emissions. Mainly it seems the charcoal canister may be it....but I also read that it could be a problem with the ecm that nissan had a recall for on the 01's. Any help would be great, my inspection is due this month and I cant afford to miss that.

Phantom01Pathfinder
i recently got this code too about 3 wks ago. I bought a new vacuum control valve bypass valve...at least i hope i got the right part. part number 14920+A. I havent changed it out yet but ill post back with results if it works... if that doesnt work then ill probably look into the charcoal canister Ive been getting terrible mpg's because of this code...about 12mpg Edited June 18, 2012 by Phantom01Pathfinder

Towncivilian
Is your gas cap the original factory one? If it is, replace it with a new OEM one.
01silvapathy
So its most likely the -Vac Bypass -Gas Cap -Evap Solenoid Guess I will start with the cheapest and work my way from there. Ill text ya Greg and see what I can come up with. Is there any easy way to test if its any of these three or is it just one of those replace a part til the light goes off deal? Tungsten
Make sure you haven't busted that charcoal canister. Sometimes the vacuum lines going from the canister will clog if you broke it.
devonianwalk
Swap the cap with your buddies R50. It'll show up on his rig if it is the problem and it will save you about $20.
albino
I was able to tell my canister was bad by checking the vac lines under the hood. On my 98 there is a green evap service port on the drivers side of the engine compartment closest to the rear of the vehicle. On one side of the port, tubing goes to the evap hardline which goes to the canister, on the other side, tubing connects to the purge valve and the engine. I would check these smaller hoses for charcoal which may indicate you need a new canister. This is how I fixed my p1440 code.

01silvapathy
My light turned itself off, then back on the day before my inspection was due. Disconnected the battery overnight to clear the code and it never came back lol

devonianwalk
I'm pretty sure that my can is the culprit. Sometimes, I can smell gas in the area the can is located behind the back wheel/bumper.
Alkorahil
You will need both the purge valve and the evap canister for the P1441 code: PART NUMBER: 14935-54U0D DESCRIPTION: VALVE ASSY, PURGE $111.88 (NISSAN LIST: $151.60) PART NUMBER: 14950-1W72B DESCRIPTION: CANISTER ASSY, EVAP $198.53 (NISSAN LIST: $269.02) The charcoal in the canisters breaks down and destroys the purge valve. Unfortuatnely a semi-common problem for the 10+ year old R50's. These are the common parts, there may be variants based on vehicle VIN. IF you PM it to me I can check it for you. PJSnow
So i just got the ses light, borrowed my buddys scanner, and P1441 shows up. I looked it up and eliminated the possibility of the gas cap. So i guess im stuck with the evap system. someone told me to smoke the system to find the "very small leak" what do you guys think is the best thing to do? Quaintbucket
Smoke system and be ready to replace the two parts that Rob suggested. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
PJSnow
so ill smoke the system but if i do have to replace them can i just get a yes or no if this is the right part? it is a little cheaper but i have no idea what it looks like so just making sure. and i cant seem to find the canister for vq35de or is it the same as the 33? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dorman-Vapor-Canister-Vent-Valve-Replaces-OE-14935-54U00-14935-54U05-/231152561220?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35d1c42c44
JeffsR50
http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/11442-how-to-replace-evap-canister-and-valves/ this helped me out alot on this issue. FYI - my purge valve? I took mine apart - gave it some wd40 moved it around to get all the little crusties out, blew out the lines (this was the pain for me- took 3 or 4 trips back and forth blowing from under the hood to under the tail). finally you should feel it blow through.. .re- installed both valves (also gave the one at the box some wd) - and my evap codes havent come back. - also I will say that mine really seemed to enjoy the seafoam treatment after the black dust in the intake from this canister burst issue. good luck! 01Pathmaker
Chased this code for many months, replaced almost everything in the evap system but still kept getting the light. Mine was also accompanied by a gas odor near the left rear wheel area. I replaced: cut valve, bypass valve, charcoal canister, purge valve fill/vent tube assembly (under recall) and gas cap. Turned out to be the o-ring seal on the top of the gas tank (sending unit). First, check inside some of the evap lines for black particles which would indicate the insides of the canister breaking up. If it looks good and you or your mechanic has access to a smoke machine, use it, it's worth the time, aggravation and money saved.
