RainGoat
RainGoat - How's the full length roof rack coming?Well, the rain has started-that won’t stop until July. In some sunbreaks I still want to do a thorough clean & waxing of the roof before mounting the rack. I’m also working on about 1cm “towers” between the rails & the conduit clamp (to be fair, TownDawgR50 is really working on it for me). Pathy_02 put his on with conduit clamps to the rails about a year ago & it looks great. For my purposes I need just a little more clearance. I move slow so it may take a few weeks-months.
Charlie_Brown
Went wheeling and stumbled on a nice hard track, steep and big rocks off camber. Running on my 31s I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it but the old girl crawled right up it with minor wheel spin and not much complaint. Heard a very odd noise come out from the truck which I want able to track down getting out if the truck. No leaks aside from a bit of water that seemingly came out of the overflow tube. Whine stopped suddenly and never came back through the rest of the trail and driving through town. My best thought is power steering since my custom line is quite finicky (modified a few parts to fit against the frame with a vg33 swap). Planning to look under the truck tomorrow and double check everything but no leaks, oils fine and water is fine with no over heats. Two projects coming up this week, number 1 is to make a skid plate for the oil pan so I can stop stressing while crawling over larger rocks. Number 2 is to make a fold down table on the tire carrier so I can grill while on a trip this next coming Thursday. One week to do both.
adamzan
Wheeled it for the last 4 weeks. Awesome time. Ordered Doug thorley headers as my exhaust is original on the 95 and getting crusty.
Charlie_Brown
Went shopping for 3/8 steel and struck out. Gotta call around tomorrow. Was raining cats and dogs all day so no work done but was able to go mudding. Give it a few days when I'm under the truck making the damn skid plate and I'll regret ever doing that lol
AlabamaDan
I snagged a battery hold down at the JY. A little sanding and painting and all fixed. Much better than the bungee cord I had. lol
onespiritbrain
I installed some LED bulbs in my map light and front/rear dome light fixtures. I also put wedge style LEDs in my gauge cluster. This is from last night. The camera on my phone was picking up a lot more light than what was visible to my eyes. This is closer to what it really looks like. I couldn’t get an accurate picture of what the fixture itself looks like to the eyes. The camera must pick up a good amount more than the eye. Today my other LEDs came in so I put one 5000k bulb in the passenger map light fixture and left the red on the driver. That way, I have light when I need it but I also have the option to keep my night eyes. For the dome lights I went with 3500k bulbs. I like the warm incandescent filament color temperature but the added brightness is hopefully going to be an upgrade. I don’t know yet because the sun is still up. I am most excited about the gauge cluster. The incandescent bulbs just aren’t bright enough for this new gauge cluster I got from the junkyard. The background color is a metallic grey with micro flakes and the lettering is white so the contrast is pretty poor when driving in the evening or morning and the super dim bulbs literally do nothing until it’s almost completely dark out. Here is the difference as of now.I’ll never lose another burger again! We’ll see what it looks like tonight. RainGoat
Yep, the two color combo is what I’ve done in my map lights as well. We’re lucky because in all the other cars I manage the map lights come on with the door so you can’t individually select them like we can. While I like the idea of changing the hue(Kelvin temperature) of the instrument cluster, I like dimming down quite a bit when doing long drives at night. Does your dimmer still work with the LEDs (I’ve burnt out my first dimmer about 2006)

I've heard it doesn't work, but I'm not sure. I like a bright dash in the day, and I'd love to change the color, but at night I DO NOT appreciate bright lights in the cabin. onespiritbrain
Well I went with warm white for the gauge cluster but I think there is a blue hue in the actual cluster itself because it’s slightly more blue now.. but not much. Here’s a pic, you can see the 4WD diagram there has the warmer looking light and that’s what it all looked like before and now it’s a tiny bit more bluish:Superbrighrleds.com spec section said that the ones I bought are dimmable and they do dim when I roll the dimmer switch. Here’s the ones I got:https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/instrument-cluster-gauge/74-led-bulb-3-smd-led-miniature-wedge-retrofit-car/228/1068/Here what the spec section says:So are you saying the LED burns out or the dimmer switch itself?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
onespiritbrain
I put a new passenger control arm on today. The bushing with a bolt running thru it was almost completely disintegrated. The driver side fell to pieces earlier this year.. I still need to change the ball joints. The steering is way better than it was.I really just wanted to tell you guys about my experience changing my universal joints today. So Autozone’s ujoint tool was bent badly so I couldn’t use it so I drove back home worrying about the beating I was about deliver to my drive shaft..I did have to beat the original NSKs out but to my delight the SKFs I replaced them with slid in with weight of my body on one side and with light blows from the hammer on the other side. It was the same each time. One cap would slide in with my weight allowing me to seat the trunnion slightly in both caps while I hammered the second one down. Best experience installing ujoints ever. The new ujoints solved the low pitch rumble I had going on at 40mph and up. I was so afraid it was this transmission! The rumble started while my other transmission was dying it’s death and I knew it couldn’t be that big a coincidence but there was that sinking feeling in the back of my mind that this new transmission was suffering a problem that produced the same vibration.I’ve got new Moog OEM springs for the front and back I’ll be putting on next weekend and also trailing arm bushings for the uppers and lowers!

RainGoat
That does look nice. The dimmers themselves are a little fragile. My OEM burnt out & a used one I replaced it with has always been a bit wonky-overly sensitive.

AlabamaDan
Nothing very dramatic, but a little. In installed some roof rack bars from a 2001 QX4 and a whole bunch of rail nuts so I can always have tie down points. Until I get a basket this should help. AlabamaDan
I also had a bad headlight fixture. As you can see below it looks like water got inside and rusted the bottom or something. Made it not only look bad but very dim. So off to the JY I went and was lucky enough to find one that looked better. And installed it today. AlabamaDan
Last think was that I was able to snag an OE transmission cooler from a QX4. I even got all the lines and brackets. It was originally used in line with the radiator, but I’m going to bypass the radiator altogether I think. I also have a trans cooler from a 90s Ford Explorer. If it fits the brackets I may use it with these OE brackets and hardlines. We will see. That’s a project for another day. RainGoat
Do one of these on the driver’s side map light & a white one on the passenger side (or vice versa. Map Lights #1895: DDM Tuning BA9S-5x5050 SMD, Red LED 1w(60lm)
RainGoat
Those load bars work great. I loved that I could keep them behind the sunroof for quiet & then slide them to the front to carry lumber, kayaks, etc. I mounted a Yakima basketcase directly to the rails, just in front of the rear load bar (its profile sits below the load bars). It worked great for me & pretty inexpensive.

AlabamaDan
I snagged to fender liners and a splash guard at the JY. MY OE splash guard disappeared sometime and I was excited to get another. If it was 1/4 steel it would be perfect, but it’s better than being naked. My fender liners were ripped out in a violent blowout. Nice to have all this back. It should help keep the engine bay clean.
