Taoism
I have read in other threads and on other various Nissan forums about pathfinders having built in amps for the stock speakers. I am curious is this the case for a 91 SE. If so, where might I find the amplifiers in the vehicle? Does anyone know the specs on these amps? Are they worth using, or should I just bypass them and run my own wires? I have a cpl-year old Pioneer head unit I plan to use, along with some 6 1/2" polk midbase/crossovers/pioneer tweeters for the front doors. 6x9's will eventually go in the rear location to replace the factory speakers. Not sure what I will do for bass as yet. I don't want a big box taking up room. probably a cpl 6" or 8" tubes.
beastpath
yes the 91 has an amp, it should be in the back behind the passengers side wall. access through the removable plastic bits. supposedly they have too much power and you should bypass them or use an aftermarket amp. MY1PATH
my 89 had the factory amp tucked below the factory deck. The thing had a 50A fuse on it IRRC. no other makings except the nissan logo molded into the vented casting. It only fed the rear speakers (6x9 rear 4.5" round front). I guess the later models can't have it there cause there a compartment there... anyway, I pulled it out and bypassed the wires when I installed my aftermarket deck (& 6" round fronts). I did some re-search later on and found out it is always reccomended to bypass the factory amp when using an aftermarket deck becasue the aftermarket deck biases power differantly than many stock deck+amp setups and it can damage the aftermaket deck if you don't do so. Aftermarket amps work differantly and do not fall into this category if wired correctly.
edicer2
I hate using the factory amps. I always get a over amplifiyed noise when i use them. If you have a decent deck or one made in the last like 10 years lol it will probably put out around 50 watts a speaker which is plenty. All you need to do is run your own indiviudal wires to your speakers and you will be good to go plusi think it will sounds betteR!
Alkorahil
Agreed. I did an amp bypass on mine. tool a little time but it ok to take time to do something right!
edicer2
my thoughts exactly. It will take a little time to snake some speaker wire to the doors and rear but its worth it IMO
maccdaddy
Sorry to hijack the thread, but, where did other wd21 owners mount their amps? My main goal was to have a discrete install where the sub and h/u were the only tells of a good system and I achieved that, but... I've had mine under the seats but I'm starting to regret it now because I'm petrified of water coming in and flooding them since they're so low. Adam, I would pull the trim off the passenger side in the rear and mount it behind that, no one would know it was there, if need be run a 12v fav to circulate air in there. adamzan
Just for the record both my decks were running through the factory amps and have not been damaged. The factory amps just make it so you don't have to turn it up as loud. My sony deck works perfectly with them, it's brand new and is a 52wX4
Simon
It's not 52Wx4....it's maybe 15w x4, as you're limited to the output of the stock amplifiers.
edicer2
the stock amps will help you turn it up louder but it sounds like crap its best to just go around them thats whati did. I mounted my amps behind my rear seat. same with my cap. you cant see them unless you move the sub box out of the way. IDK if i would put it in the side of the truck because that way it can overheat fi not cooled properly like stated and if you pop a fusei can be a pain to fix Edited May 12, 2009 by edicer2

I put a 200w Alpine in the back behind the trim. It was the right diminesions so that it fit perfectly.

On mine (IIRC) the amp in the dash was for the rear speakers and the one in the rear side panel was for the front....how backwards is that? On mine (IIRC) the amp in the dash was for the rear speakers and the one in the rear side panel was for the front....how backwards is that? That's quite normal for a lot of Pathies/Terranos. Mine is in the rear side panel however. I never did find an amp in the front, even after all the local radio specialists advised it was there. I simply ran new wiring for my sound system. Akmike
We are currently in the process of a system install. Tomorrow the mounting plate will be cut and painted. The amp is just a 100x4 so not real big, so picture the inside spare tire mount... plate will mount on the lower supports spanning them and the amp will mount to the plate, vibration isolated with rubber feet. Semi hidden, full air flow. Planning on draping similar carpet over the top brackets to hide it a little once done... if it can be seen easily. The LoPro 1200 watt sub will be mounted vertically on the passenger side in the back opposite of the spare on custom brackets. It's black and won't be seen well thought the tint. The amp on the other hand is Brite white. We'll see when done. Cheers. Thanks for everyone who contributes. Any suggestions on getting the speaker wire to the front doors? Passenger side has played out to be difficult. Also, best spot for breaching the firewall with power wires? AKMIKE
onespiritbrain
You should start a new thread. I spliced into the existing wires to get to the door speakers; so from amp to rear of head unit, then using a wiring diagram, from rear of head unit spliced to existing wiring to reach door speakers. I came thru the firewall right here: Word of anecdotal warning.. I think that my transmission was helped into its grave by the severe voltage drops during bass heavy music; robbing the various solenoids of power... again anecdotal. RF600
I ran new wires to the door speakers. I didn't go through the factory loom. I poked a hole in the grommet in the door and ran new wire through there. Same with the grommet on the body. Other vehicles I have used existing wiring and spliced into the new deck wiring. I haven't noticed a sound difference.
