Snorkels - Xterra?

I already know that nobody makes a snorkel specific to the R50s. Has anyone tried to fit an Xterra/Frontier or older Pathfinder/Hardbody snorkel? How about a 4Runner?

I remember that a while ago on A/C someone posted about making a custom snorkel with drain pipe or the like, however, I want something clean looking. I like the snorkels that AC sells, but, naturally, there isn't one for the R50....

Any luck fitting another vehicles snorkel to ours?

If not, does anyone want to sponsor me as a guinea pig?:aok:

11/11/2006 Edit: Yes...it's possible! See my lengthy post on Page 2 for details!

I think the 4runner snorkel would be the right shape, but the engine airbox attachments would be all wrong. They have their airbox on the passenger side I beleive, and I'm sure the connection points on their airbox would be pretty dissimilar to ours. But it seems like a snorkel from an xterra or frontier would be at least a close fit, pretty much the same airbox, but different fender configurations. Only one way to find out for sure... :D

Hm...I guess the only thing holding manufacturers back is the possibility of compromising the structural integrity of the truck, since it is unibody and all....but I've seen snorkels on XJs....and SFAs, so why not us? ;)

I'll check it out tomorrow when I'm in the fender...:aok:

So, I took apart my drivers side today, and discovered that we would only have to cut a 3" hole in the fender skin. This, coupled with a nice 3" tube going thru the fender, will cause no, or negligible loss in structural rigidity. Heck, even losing the whole fender skin and driving around I didn't notice any difference. There is already a large intake related box and tube inside of the fenderwell, that can be used, or eliminated. There is a sensor attached to the tube, which will have to be transplanted, and is in a 7/8" hole (easy enough). We can then route a tube from the hole in the fender, behind the plastic protector stuff through the stock intake hole under where the airbox goes, and into the airbox.

Now, just finding a snorkel that fits...

I checked out a few older (92-95) 4Runners, and the intake is on the Drivers side...nice...I just need to get ahold of one for shape...

If I could also get ahold of an Xterra snorkel for shape and size, it may be able to be heated and formed to fit the fender skin nicely....and we can always run a nice seal around the outside to close it up good, and look nice....

Anyone willing to contribute? :aok: I KNOW for a fact that there are R50 owners interested in a nice looking, up the A-Pillar snorkel, where are you guys?

APPARENTLY, the Nissan Xterra snorkel works on a ZJ with modified brackets...Interesting...

Here's a link...

Since this guy put a Nissan product on his Jeep, does that mean we can put an Xterra Snorkel on our R50s? Quite possibly...

Now, who wants to help me out in getting an Xterra snorkel?

There's also hope for a decent looking homegrown snorkel. ODG over on NOR made this one for about $50....

As you can see, I REALLY want a snorkel on my R50. I've been researching this stuff for the past 3 nights...Hey, hey, before you go off on that I need a life nonsense, I just so happened to have installed a Trans Cooler, and replaced my brake pads/rotors and repacked my wheel bearings today, all while attempting to figure out how to work a snorkel into the fender without risking structural integrity. So :P

Ok...3 posts in 25 minutes...maybe I do need a life.... :X

Here's a scoop, ;)

There's a couple of threads on this issue in the Pathfinders' Club of Australia (PCoA) forum. Some folks have done a fair bit of research on this and here's the state-of-play:

1. Various Safari / Airtec and other manufacturers' snorkels have been considered and are not suitable.

2. The snorkel for the XTerra is actually designed for the Navara (which is the Aussie version of the Frontier) and apparently is a real pain in the @$$ to fit to the XTerra. Nissan says it's compatible but ask someone who's tried it. Surf the XTerra forums awhile and you'll see that they're having the same kinda snorkel-anguish we are.

3. Apparently, the auto engineers reckon cutting a hole through the R50's fender is a strucural problem due to the monocoque/unibody construction. I don't know, I'm just repeating what I've heard here.

4. I'm working on a prototype snorkel for the R50 at the moment. It doesn't require cutting the fender, either. :D If successful (and I don't know why I wouldn't be) I'll sell them as kits with instructions and all parts included. Or just as instructions with a parts list. ;) I hope to start shipping these bad boys in a couple months. Sorry for the delay. It's due to my currently undergoing a change in career, home, workshop and state of residence. (Otherwise, my life's in order!!! )

I'll keep the prices down, too.

I'm not really taking orders yet (until I have a working prototype) but feel free to PM me if you just can't wait.

By the way, check out the Pathfinders' Club of Australia site at Pathfinders' Club of Australia

Cheers,

Anyone who is interested in purchasing an Airtec/ARB style snorkel, sign this A/C thread.

If there is enough interest, we can get A/C to help with locating and fitting a snorkel to our trucks. The speculated price is under $300 going from the going rate of other Nissan snorkels on A/C. :aok:

One of the guys that came to the Nissan Trail Jamboree installed his Snorkel (Navara) on his Xterra. I think the pain part of it is if you want to form it tighter to the top of the fender line. I guess they say to use a heat gun. He didn't want to risk screwing up and there is a slight gap, but most won't notice it unless pointed out.

I know that Max Stryker is building some "homegrown" kits I think he is using PVC not positive though. He says he will include measurment templates for you too. sounds pretty good, if you are worried about the look of PVC then just get the kit then get some other kinda tubing and route it up yourself. just my .02 I will probably get one eventually but I have to figure out a way to save some money first.
