Just wanted to announce that once again my thorleys are spitting exhaust out at the head....

anyone else have these things come loose as often as i??... if i'm going to tear this thing appart again i'm going to know the method to fix it once and for all... any sugestions?.

i'm thinking that i am going to replace all the studs and use all new nuts and factory washers.. and use the thorley gasket...if that doesn't do it then i'm revamping everything... VG3.3, computer, P&P, SAS, atlas 4SP, 35's, hydraulic ram steering, but i'll kep the thorleys... then i'll be soo happy about everything else that a exhaust leak won't bother me...

(written with sarcasm...but please send sugestions)

When I did mine, I replaced the studs, new washer spacers and new nuts... torqued with a crows foot and all.... No leaks, FelPro Gasket.... The Lock Nuts are disigned for 1 use only...

On my 95 when the Passenger side was redone with a stock manifold we just decked the manifold and no gasket... no Leaks and its been 20K+Miles on it so far...

I'm sorry for your troubles, but had a happy resolution to my exhaust woes this week. Midas had trashed more than half my exhaust studs and left them that way. I only recently found a shop which repaired the damage for half what Midas charged to muck it up. I carried in the studs and gaskets and paid them $335. I'd been quoted a thousand a side so am very happy with my stock quiet pathy. I hope it lasts and I hope to see your problem fixed, as I've considered Thorleys. Now a letter to Midas corporate, and then to small claims court?

If you warped the headers due to overtorquing them, be prepared to compensate Thorley appropriately. After all, they would be repairing the damage you induced, not fixing a design problem. And get a torque wrench before installing this time. I'm willing to bet you've been applying whole lot more torque than is needed and bending/warping the flanges. My experience is that 99% of inexperienced mechanics not using the proper tools overtorque everything.

But check with a straight edge first. The Thorleys have a very beefy, thick flange. Maybe it was just bending and did not take a permanent set.

And I'd also suggest replacing the studs while you're at it. If you did overtorque, you've stretched and weakened them, which puts them at higher risk of failing. It will be a lot easier to remove and replace now rather than after they snap off.

MIDAS = CRAP!

Here is a picture showing how one of their "PROS" installed gaskets on my exhause system.

Duhhh...

yeah I busted them on it too.

True, dat.

Thankfully, now you know better!

Trust yourself. No one else.

When I asked the Manager at Midas where this particular mechanic was, I was told he is no longer there.....he's at another location now AS THE NEW MANAGER! I just laughed and said "yeah he's the best man for the job I guess."

They also wouldn't put a higher performance muffler on my rig because "it was too much work and not worth it" yet they sell the brand and the model that would fit a pathfinder....just requires a little more welding. Insisted their Midas brand was just as good and like an idiot at the time, I believed it. Looking back now, I should have just gone someplace else but this was in 2001 and I was a newbie Pathfinder owner at the time.

Live and learn. I do most of my work on it myself now just by learning and reading and researching online (like here!).

The harder stuff goes to a certified Nissan Import specialist shop and they impressed the hell outta me with my alignment and torsion bar adjustments, and honesty to point out other minor things that "would cost this much...but if you know a fair amount about car repairs...you should be able to do these things yourself, if not, just bring it back by and we'll take care of it for you."

Someday I'll get around to changing my knock sensor which has been bad for years. Nissan just HAD to put that damn thing under the intake manifold slap dead center on the top of the block.....wish they just put one on each side of the block instead where they would be ACCESSABLE. My only complaint about the engine design :)
