  1. You guys are great! Thanks for the encouragement, and yes if needed will definitely go to ebay! Funny about the 100 mph, it was when standing still in stopped traffic! Wheee
  2. Right. Inexpensive and handy...we just have had no need until now! Whatever it takes to keep my Pathfinder going! I refuse to give up on it. Working on understanding the wiring issues before tackling it again with one. Husband built himself what he is calling a "creeper"...board with wheel,s so he can more comfortably do this stuff. Very proud of it...a carpenter more than an auto mechanic.! ; ) I took it to town a few days ago (before we got covered in 2 feet of snow) and speedometer is getting some kind of power/current as it rises (not accurately) to 20 mph, and eventually 50, again not accurately an does not reflect either speeding up or slowing down. It has also fallen with gravity I assume, to 100 mph. Making it a vehicle with 3 speeds: 20, 50, 100!
  3. I appreciate everyone describing what they have done and the result. We are thinking we will check all the wiring before we buy a speedometer, as it "looks' so workable. We have an electrician friend with the voltage reader needed to do this...we don't have one or would probably have already done this! We are not mechanics and husband needs better direction...hate to send him into too many non-productive directions...it is he who has done all the crawling around under the Pathfinder!
  4. sbrowning0723. In hindsight, might save a lot of grief going to the speedo first. That VSS thing is an ugly ordeal. We are still pondering what comes next. We need a few days away from the issue ; 0 Sincere thanks to those helping us along with this!
  5. Slartibartfast - I appreciate your post back. I printed it and will use it as a guide to our next endeavor! I agree, not much point in learning how to read the ECU codes at this point. Husband did take the speedometer and dash sector apart yesterday and said everything looks very clean...which does not equate to functioning! Thanks too, msavides...I would really like to hear back on whether replacing cluster solves the problem! This vehicle has for the last several years had electrical problems...door looks going up and down, a slow drain from battery...all kinds of weird things. A Nissan dealership was on a program of just changing out parts...as long as I was still under warranty around 1998-99. After that went away, have just lived with some of this as being non--essential! We disconnected under the dash foot zone lights, connection to doors that turn on lights, mostly solved. Worst was the phase of having to actually lift the hood and disconnect the battery everywhere I went so as not to be left stranded with a non-starting car! That was discovered to be an arcing light in the taillight sector...finally resolved! Many things I have just learned to live without...the heated seats, the remote for door locks, etc. It just is what it is!
  6. kootenaypathy - Does your check engine light come on when the speedometer is not working and does you odometer stop working too?
  7. Regarding 1995 Nissan Pathfinder LE - I had posted my issue with speedometer being erratic, it and odometer not working when engine light went on, and with some advice and encouragement decided to replace the VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor... which did not resolve the problem! That was an ugly ordeal. Any advice from this group knowing that it can work for a bit, then engine light comes on and it doesn't work. It's not an all or nothing thing...varies. HELP!
  8. The new sensor arrived Thursday (happy valentine's day) and above poster was correct that we still needed the gear...as new one did not come with it! ; 0 Finally got it installed and just this morning took vehicle for a test drive. NOT FIXED. Still engine light comes on and speedometer acts erratically, then does not function. Obviously, we are now going to have to direct our attention to the speedometer itself, I guess! Sigh... Bottom line...don't assume this issue is speed sensor. Worst possible part to replace if you are not a mechanic! We survived that, now wondering now hard it will be to remove the dash or whatever we have to do next....! Do not know if or whether it is worth it to learn how to read the codes from the gizmo under the passenger seat. Seems more sensible to just go to the next possibly? The Speedometer itself. Any advice on that?
  9. With great difficulty husband has removed the sensor, new one arriving by Thursday, $73+ on Amazon...3 sources say it is the right one for the Pathfinder. After all this, I am so hoping this resolves it. Hate the thought of then dealing with it being a different issue! In all honesty, from our experience, I don't think you can remove that thing without destroying it!
  10. I so appreciate your help! We might get this figured out.... Thank you, Slartibartfast!
  11. Check engine light on, then sometimes off. When check engine light is on, speedometer and odometer do not work. A suggestion was it could be a speed sensor. Any thoughts, ideas or how to do this?? I can find parts, but need to be clear what I am looking for and how to proceed. I cannot even find a photo or video showing where this part fits on vehicle!! Husband is willing to to try. Do not want to go to a dealer, being a 1995 model. I bought this new and love it/want to to go on forever! It is a 4-wheel drive, automatic transmission. HELP!
