  1. Hey look at that... I just tipped over the 1000 posts benchmark! YAY!!!

  2. What is a good cheap tuner for a 99

    1. mjotrainbrain

      mjotrainbrain

The general consensus here is going to be that a "tuner" (especially a cheap one) isn't going to do anything, and if it does it certainly won't help with the longevity of your engine. A good old fashioned tune up is going to be the best way to get some performance and efficiency back out of your Pathfinder.

You having a VG33 there's a few things you can do to squeak a bit more power out of it (like 3.0 cams) if you'd really like, but more than anything that'll be for the fun of modifying it.

Basically, make sure it's in tip-top running condition and accept that realistically that's all you'll get.

  3. Snohomish county in Washington is apparently a haven for car thieves.

Now my 1988 Pathfinder has been stolen, partially stripped and damaged.  I got it back, but it was no longer drivable. The radiator was blown apart and a bunch of wiring was torn out of engine compartment.  I had insurance coverage through state farm, but they are doing all they can to get out of paying for the claim.  They sent Kim Robinson to talk with me about the claim this week, but it was really a 2 hour interrogation and not at all intended to resolve the claim.   I was insuring a lot through State Farm until that meeting.  My monthly premiums were over $400 for my Carver Yacht, 2006 Truck, the Pathfinder, and renters insurance.  Now everything has been moved to Progressive and Metro Mile Insurance companies.

She asked me stuff like how long I worked for my employer, why I chose to not insure some of my vehicles for periods of time. Why I owned some vehicles that I didnt drive daily. Essentially, she was convinced I am trying to do something shady and she is on a fishing expedition to find out what exactly.

This is awful news! Can't believe you got this kind of luck again, sucks big time about insurance trying to screw you over too. Good luck with the situation, at least this time the rig was found quickly and there's some degree of resolution.

I always overlook this section, and I almost missed a gem!  @RedPath88 remembered to shave before his pic :kyle:

  6. ? with 241k miles and unknown history the time has come to do the timing belt. I'm preparing resources, collecting P/N, and will be ordering parts soon.

    1. mjotrainbrain

      mjotrainbrain

Hopefully it's been changed at least once before!  In any case it's made it until now, get 'er done so she keeps running for a long time to come!  It'll be interesting to see the condition of the belt, post pics if it's interesting!

  7. I need to plan a trip into the city (Seattle/Tacoma) to go junkyard exploring for stuff...

      mjotrainbrain

Junkyard exploring is always a good time

  8. Who would be interested in seeing me pick up an intake box from the junkyard (only ~$10) to do a detailed how-to on how to make the most out of the stock intake system without having to go to a full snorkel?  It worked great for me and has worked great for those who I've passed the instructions onto so far, and I've been toying with doing a proper write up.

    1. mjotrainbrain

      mjotrainbrain

I'm going to the junkyard today so if the Pathfinders there still have the parts I'll do it.  I have the spare materials still at home, just need the box.

  9. I got my first welding machine today!! Super excited. And yes, I know how to weld, just never had my own machine before. Going to school for it in a few months as well so thats a big plus

Yeah, pretty easy and makes an appreciable difference.  I'll be looking forward to seeing your flag mount when it's done!

Basically on the 4th gen 4Runner if you want to fit a tire bigger than 33", or even some 33's, you need to cut the edge off of a body mount then weld on a filler plate to keep it strong enough.  It's just a way to gain an extra inch or two of clearance.

Sounds like a great project, that and a body mount mod are the two I'd like to do if I had a welder.

Woo hoo!  I've been thinking about picking up a machine myself, but our garage isn't wired for 220.  I may have to get to work with the shovel and conduit and change that next year...

What welder did you get, and MIG or TIG?  I've done MIG a little bit before, cool that you have experience already though.

  15. Time for the game: When does it blow out?

My transfer case is slowly dripping fluid and for now, its a guessing game of when it blows lol *Suicide*

    1. mjotrainbrain

      mjotrainbrain

Mine started leaking after wheeling it really hard one time.  I'm guessing one of the many many times I high-centered that day I just messed up the seal by cramming dirt into it...anyways, had the front output seal replaced and it was good to go.

  16. Hi, Everybody. This is Osmund. I just desire to greet everyone here from Las Vegas, NV. I relocated to Las Vegas, NV in Dec,. 2016 from South Bend area, IN. Mostly I have been working with public schools as a guest teacher in IN and NV for more than ten years. Partly, I like to visit National Parks in southwest of the U.S.A. For the past summer, I visited National Parks in MT, WY, ID, UT and AZ. on regular routes. The scenery there were amazing. If I could go off road there, I might see more beautiful scenery.

This morning I happened to find NPORA. Oh, That was it, in which I I wanted to joined. So that I could learn basic skills in off road knowledge.

I have a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder Le, white. It has 76,000 miles on it. I love it very much. I consider that as a Land Rover Defender. It does looks like it. does not it?

Again. It is nice to meet you here.

    Sincerely yours

Welcome!  Not a lot of information on here about the R51, but certainly enough to get you started!

  17. Well, it's gone.  Hopefully the new owners take care of it like I did, they seemed like good people who know what they're doing.  Doesn't make it hurt less.  ?

    1. mjotrainbrain

      mjotrainbrain

Yup, it did happen.  Really liking my new 4Runner though.  Definitely lots of aftermarket, but man is it scary how similar it is to the QX4!  Even the spare interior LED bulbs I had were the right ones to pop right in.  As soon as I recover from the costs of this purchase I'll be regularly cruising Craisglist again as I always have, keeping an eye out for that one in a million dirt cheap rust free WD21 or R50.....I'm Pathy-less now, but not forever!

  19. Very sadly getting rid of the R50 before winter. Looking at WD22 Xterra's, but the interior feels so cheap and crappy by comparison...

    1. mjotrainbrain

      mjotrainbrain

I thought about getting a rust free one, but I figured I'd rather get something with a frame for now; if I get another R50, I want it to be a second vehicle that I can keep out of the snow and SALT.  Current plan is to celebrate college graduation with a plane ticket to Arizona and a few thousand bucks.  Maybe have parts shipped down and go on adventures with forum folks on my way back up.

Basically it's got lots of rust. Not nearly as bad as some people's rigs, but enough that it would cost a small fortune to fix, and even then I can tell there's plenty more coming. Or do you mean why am I considering a WD22?

I certainly look forward to it! Yours is such a beast build.

  23. Just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone on this forum for all the help that has been provided to myself and others, as of today I've finally figured out the fix to my ABS light which has been on for almost 10 years now. The Pathy has never looked/functioned this good!

      mjotrainbrain

10 years, that's such a long time! Congrats on getting that figured out! The forum really is amazing.

  24. The Pathy gave me an early birthday present!! Finally got all the leaks figured out underneath her and only got to enjoy that for 3 or 4 weeks. Looks like one of my cv joints is starting to leak, not bad, but definitely need to address it soon. Yay!!! *suicide*

      mjotrainbrain

Ah, that sucks! There's always something. Oh well, could be a lot worse than just a CV!
