  1. I noticed that there are no places to attach a chain to lift this engine out. What is everyone else using to lift this engine out? I've used a chain and a bolt before but thought I'd reach out before I do this.
  2. Thanks Mr_Reverse. I'll look at that. I actually got it started tonight after spraying some starter fluid into the intake. It still took a long crank then started and idled without any death rattles. When I put it in gear to go back into the garage it stalled and wont start again. If the cam timing was off, would it still run like this? I read the codes while it was running and got the following. P0125 Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control P1441 ELC System 1 P0446 Evap System Vent Control Circuit P0450 Evap System Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit It's had the Evap codes before without any starting problems. Could the other two cause the starting issue?
  3. Just finished a timing belt on the 97 and it started got backed out of the garage and was shut off. Now it won't start. It has spark and fuel. I put a timing light on it and while its cranking I can see the timing marks on the crank pulley, so I feel that the new belt is on correctly. What can be preventing it from starting?
  4. I just crawled underneath and with the help of a friend have figured that its the transfer case.We used a paint marker and marked the drive shafts(F& R) and then made the tires spin in 4wd. The marks were immediately out of phase.I'd have to assume that the t-case in this Pathy is chain driven and the chain is slipping when under load. Thanks for the help.Just wanted to post what I found.
  5. Thanks for the input.Yes it only makes the noise under load and in 4wd.I can put it in 4wd and no noise while I drive until I spin the wheels under power (load).Im going to have a good look this morning.330k and I just put new axles on both sides about a year ago.New bearings too.
  6. My 97 has developed a sound in the front end whenever the front wheels lose traction and spin in 4wd.The noise seems to be coming from the drivers side and sounds like two gears slipping over each other.Has anyone has this before?I'm thinking its in the front diff, but am puzzled why its only on one side. Any suggestions as to what it could be?
  7. Just wanted to follow up on this thread. The P0300 was not the distributor.I swapped in a known good distributor and still the same.I pulled the MAF sensor and sprayed carb clean onto a Q-tip and cleaned both filaments carefully. The truck revs normally now. As for the p0500-I swapped in a new VSS and was able to clear the code. Going to test drive now.Hopefully all good.
  8. Thanks XPLORx4.I'll see how difficult it is to remove the sensor.I'll also check the coil.Luckily I have another 97 for parts.
  9. I read the codes and got both a P0300 and a P0500.The 500 is the VSS malfunction, I used the live feature on the reader and drove the truck, the vehicle speed remained at zero.Where is the VSS located? AS for the P0300 - I'm not too sure where to start.
  10. Thanks.I'll be taking a look at it tonite. One thing I failed to mention was that the speedo quit working at the same time....not sure if that changes anything but thought I'd mention it.
  11. My 97 was running just fine then today when I started it the CEL came on and the truck was sluggish and jerking on acceleration. I then noticed the od light flashing and the lack of power. I had several codes including bank 1 o2 sensor, knock sensor, emissions systems and a gear 1 and gear 2 out of range.Sorry I did not save the P #s.I cleared the codes last night but now theres still a miss.In neutral when I put it to the floor it struggles to hit 4000 rpm. This was a good running truck with new dist cap, plugs fuel filter, knock sensor,o2 sensor and more. Any ideas what could be causing this
  12. I'm getting 10 mpg around town and think my 97 should do better. It gets close to 20 mpg on the highway. This thing is pretty bad on fuel around town. The timing belt was done before I bought it and I've changed a cat a knock sensor and an o2 sensor since.Any ideas what I might look at? Or is this just the nature of the beast?
  13. I've tightened the vc once already and I've done the knock sensor relocation.I'm going to remove the intake and do the gaskets.I'll check the coolant hoses while I'm there.
  14. My PF needs valve cover gaskets and I am looking for information from others who have done this.I realize I have to pull the intake to do the d/s and I've read some of the hoses are a pain to get off.Should they be ordered?I'd like to order all the parts and be able to start and finish without delay. 1)What gaskets/parts do I need besides the v/c set? 2) What else should be done while she's apart?I've already relocated the knock sensor.
  15. I just replaced my passenger side catalytic and I just wanted to say that it is a pretty easy job.The nice heat shields that Nissan built did not get re-used as the aftermarket cat I bought had its own heat shield built into it.The factory converter had nothing in it and I think someone gutted it.I hope that the media hasn't gone into my muffler. I've been driving it with the CEL on(PO 420) and since the weather has got colder my fuel mileage has become dismal.I hope it will improve now that the cat has been replaced.
