  1. This is amusing. Being an old guy I find the lessons learned decades ago never seem to translate to the next group of youth coming up. Does every generation need to learn the hard way? I think that maybe they do.
  2. While I do not currently work for them I put 22 years in with Exxon/Mobil. The only legitamate reason is delivery disruption. What we have here is commodity brokers running the crude future price up which "forces" the real price to go up. Additionally there have been some mysteryous shut downs at refineries in teh country. Why take a refiner down for maintainence during the summer season? There have been some legitamate shut downs for small fires but nothing unusual. BP is the first to raise the price at the pump and they have NO crude source from the middle east. They get Alaskan and SOuth American crude only. Look at big oil profits. They have been going up and up in teh last few months. If it is truely an initial crude cost profits don't go up. One big truth--- the US has not built a refinery in decades and many have closed. There are many resaons for this, but a big one is that no one wants a refinery near where they live. Lets face it these need to be on the coast some place not in the middle of Kansas. rebuttles?
  3. It is a difficult job and you need the right tools, not just enough of them. Most of the time I just cut the exhaust studs and bolts because they never come off. Now I am not sure that a cat 5 speed will bolt into a pathfinder. I know that a PU will go in just fine. There are sources that I am sure we can find one right in your back yard. But obviously I need to know where that yard is.
  4. Absolute agreement with 88. FORGETABOUTIT. Find a used tranny. For your 2 wheel drive they are all over the place for as low as $400. These are the same trannys used in the PU trucks of those years. This is an easy swap. With 2 gears lost you will spend more in parts than the whole used tranny will cost. A Japanese take out will work also but will cost more.
  5. Slick thte POR15 is great stuff. On the outside of the frame it is going to help. My question has been with the totally boxed frame how do you get it on the inside?? BTW the very early Pathys were not as prone to frame rot as were the 93s on. In the midwest there is almost no rot free 95s at all. My belief is that it had something to do with thte steel formulation that Nissan switched to in the early 90s
  6. Buying the belt with the timing marks on the belt makes the job alot easier. I basically ignore the marks on the engine shrouds. If you have a non factory oil pump, you do not have a mark for the crank anyways. Takes me a long time just because I never can string more than a couple of hours together at a time. I'd guess I take 6 hours off and on to complete. A good belt from Gates should cost around $20 and just plan on changing it every year. (I can not wait to hear the comments on that one)
  7. THEY DID IT 4 POSTING OF THE SAME PATHY ON EBAY WITHIN A MONTH. The seller is no longer Summer5218 but Jazz5437., posting is identical. Did they think that changing the seller was going to change the outcome. The last "buyer" of the 1993 pathy is also a car seller on ebay in the same area of Mass. Possibly another alias? Only one "buyer" left any feedback for Summer5218 and they stated that the Pathy was a piece of isht. I think I'll write to them and ask what they really saw. Congrats to becomeing the worst Ebay seller that I have found!!!! Summer 5218 or Jazz5437 or what ever the ID is for tomorrow.
  8. 91 with 110,000 miles. Found it on Ebay for $1100. When I looked at it it would not run, have only a few wheel studs per wheel and was very dirty. The not running part was simply bad wires that the guy was too dumb to figure out. I bought and fixed it in his driveway and drove it off. A couple of hundred later it was very drivable. THEN...... If the wire comes off of the oil sender the guge does not register 0 pressure. It was "my fault " and it toasted the #2 rod to the crank. My son needed a project to work on for his auto tech college so he rebuilt it. Now I have over $1500 in the motor alone.
  9. I think I saw you were in TX. So Diamond Auto in San Antonio = $400, Action Auto in Ft Worth = $650, ASAP motors in Houston= $795 Thats a start
  10. How are you coming on that 5 speed? If you open it up and find trashed gears, just find a replacement.
  11. Yes please report back. One of my pet peeves on this forum, is people do not report back when they find a solution. Yes some do, but others, es-specially with unusual problems do not. A complete lubication failure could be a pump problem, or more likely a pump drive problem. A shaft is worn or something and the gears for the pump fail to contact when under load. So when a mechanic looks at in the static mode, he would have to recognise the wear as serious. Because he only will see enverything work like it should due to no load. A transmission dyno test would detect this problem. But who does tranny dyno tests..... a few.
  12. While I have dozens of rusted pathy pics here is the last that I will post. Do you see the problem here? Again this is on the road in Ohio. People say this can be repaired. I am not positive that a repair will hold well with this one.
  13. This is more subtle but just as serious a problem.
  14. I admit that was the worst frame I've seen, but the guy was driving it. He was trying to sell it when the pic was taken. Here is another frame from oan on the road Pathy.
  15. I can not think of anything that the computer could do that would toast the gears on the planetary!!!. The ability to down shift is designed into the tranny, even from 4000rpm. The engine may have a minor problem but the planetary should hold. This is also not a heat related issue. There is no way the tranny fuild can breakdown in less than 100 miles and cause this gear failure. Right now there are only two things that I can think of. 1) is a complete lubrication failure. 2) Mechanical mis-assembly on rebuild. At this point I do not think that I would spend any money on rebuilding the tranny in the Pathy. There is some form of mechanical damage that has been done during the first rebuild. I would replace the tranny with a used unit. Have your mechanic look the used unit over for signs of wear and replace the soft parts. I am making this statement thinking that this is happening in 2 wheel drive based on the speed you are reporting. If this is 4 wheel drive then there are obvious causes.
  16. Slick-- You said the J word MODERATOR ----do something, c :X ensor this
  17. Transtar Industries has a rebuild kit for the 5 speed FS5R30B to fit your Pathy. The problem is they expect that all of the gear teeth are ok and not broken. While kit includes most of the wear parts, drive gears are generally not considered wear parts. Now Maritimeman stripped the teeth off of his drive gears, so a kit would have done him no good. Depending on where you live in the country (your personal info sheet doesn't say) you can get a used or even a rebuilt 5 speed for around $850. Some come with warrenties and some come with free shipping. (5 speeds are easy to warrenty, don't believe a warrenty on an auto) The site to check is car-part.com. This lists many recycle yards. Find one that is close so you can go and look at the tranny first. If there is none close to you then there is a guy in Colorado who ships for free. (yea right the shipping is part of the price) But he is reasonable for his prices. -bounce-
  18. Yea I noticed that the guy does repeat most of his vehicles that are for sale. There is just a few hours left on his Pathy sale. I am waiting to see if it will relist 4 times in one month. I think that maybe a record. Now complaining to ebay will do no good. His current seller name has only been valid for a month or so. Previously there was Summer528 and Summer5210, etc. So this guy just moves around. PT Barnum was right. This guy is trying to find the right uneducated consumer to sell to.
  19. Slick, you said that was the worst frame rot you have seen. Well you need to come to NE Ohio. That Pathy would be running down the Interstate untill it broke in half sometime. There is no inspection in Ohio and I have seen much worst than that on the road.
  20. But if it was non paying bidders then why no bad feedback. Also acouple of the relists were so fast he did not have time to find out that the bidder was non paying. Still a shill bidding mess.
  21. Hey headpeace, Do you really think he will reply to that message. I believe if he does it shows up on the posting. If he does not reply it never shows. Someone can correct me on this one if I am wrong. This is only one guy, lots of them are doing it.
  22. This one is remarkable. The item is a 93 Pathy. The seller is Summer5218. The ad claims " goes to highest bidder". Well the Pathy "sold" for $1425 on 7/3/05. Then again for $2076 on 7/15/05, Now it is up for sale again. This auction ends before the end of the month. Will Summer5218 try for 4 times within one month. Lets wait and see. O Yea there was no negative feedback to the previous winners. Some of these guys are really brazen about their lack of cover up. -thnkboutit-
  23. Well here is another example of shill bidding. Paautoauctions currently has a 94 pathy with no reserve and $1.00 starting. This truck was sold on July 13th to BRBLUM for $2226. Obviously not enough money. BRBLUM has no negative feedback about a deadbeat bidder on this item, although he does on other items. The pathy was reposted on 7/15. So within 2 days of a "completed sale" the truck is back on the net. Thats not even enough time to find out if the bidder is a deadbeat. They are not even trying to hide the shill bidding!! Hey Slick where are the "hoes"
  24. It may be against Ebay rules but it happens all the time. Especially on high ticket items. My point was do not get excited about a non reserve auction for a unbelievable deal. Yes one or two may be real but..... If you are a common Ebayer then look at startautogroup1 as a seller. He does this all the time. There ris another guy that does it also, but I could not find his account off the top. By the way there is a starautogroup also. Could this be a duplicate account????? I prefer to put in a reserve on my sales. That way if I don't get the reserve I amy be willing to sell it to the highest bidder anyway. I have bought alot of things that way by offering the seller a cash deal when his high bidder turns up as a deadbeat. I know Ebay doesn't like that either.
  25. There have been many many discussion on the forum about cheap Pathfinders on Ebay with no reserve. I found the perfect example of how this works. listing 4559667353 on Ebay has closed. The Pathfinder "sold" for $3070. This same pathy is for sale again as 4562058651 from the same seller (Starautogroup1) The buyer from the first sale must have been a friend because there is no negative feedback on him regarding a deadbeat buyer on this item. So Starautogroup now has a bid of $102 on this pathy. They have a secret researve price set that make it look like there is no reserve. If they do not get their price a new friend will buy the truck and they start over again. This truck has been on Ebay atleast 2 times before the current offering. So do not get excited about low priced no reserve auction for a deal that is too good to believe. However there is a Pathy in NJ for sale with a blown motor. If you read the description they lost the T belt and destryed the heads. They just do not know that is what they did. The current bid is about $100. This one is a deal so go ahead and get excited, and just get new heads or a new motor. -bounce-
