  4. Many R50s have what’s called a diversity antenna in the front windshield. This is in addition to the whip antenna and is meant to improve signal capture. You can see it running up the midline of the windshield. As an FYI, you can see these in many other vehicles though they often put them in the cargo area side windows (they are those things which look like defrosters on the cargo area windows of 4Runners & other vehicles).

  5. For your MPG interest, More details on my 1993 top to bottom: 3/8 intake manifold insulator Jim Wolf Tech stage 1 camshafts Stock block 308,000 miles Gibson 2.5" cat back Chevy 16" (19lb alloy) with P225/75r15 tires (nearly 100 lbs less rotating mass than most sets of 31's) Depending on driving conditions we've seen 20+ MPG but 17-19 is more common for our mixed driving which is 75% highway. I hope to keep or improve this when she goes 3.3. ON the flip side my (MPFI) 89 does worse on MPG. But its lifted, extra wide wheels, typical D/E-rated 31x10.5" tires, heavy bumpers, fender liners are missing (air pockets). It also mostly does short trips with very little highway time and I think the Euro cam with its really long duration is an efficiency hindrance for the lower engine speeds.

  10. A pic and pull is a toy store for me and my good friend. We venture to the p&p in Anthony, TX and one in Tucson, AZ my wife and I and he and his wife spend our winters in SW New Mexico. But my residence is in Montana NW. Few to visiting this country. Seems the p&p in the SW have undiscovered gold...or steel and plastic. ?

  11. The ABS computer is what the warning light is wired to. No computer, no light. Not like newer rigs where everything talks to everything else and notices when somebody leaves the chat. You can get the service manual here if you haven't yet. Circuit diagrams, component locations, troubleshooting. Doesn't cover the alarm system, annoyingly, but does cover just about everything else.

  12. One of my pet peeves with my QX4 has been the engine oil dipstick. I can’t figure out for the life of me where the damn level is half the time and it just shouldn’t be like that. Today I went to the junkyard and checked a ton of dipsticks until I finally found a match! It’s a quarter inch longer but doesn’t cause any issue. I did have to sand down the plastic portion that enters the tube leading down to the engine. I am what looks like about 1.5 quarts past full... When I hear the lifters clacking I usually check the oil right away and since I couldn’t see the friggin oil level I added oil for no reason, twice. I had to add a quart or so every 5000 miles before I did the head gaskets so that’s why I thought I needed more oil. I’m quite glad to be rid of that dipstick. Edit: haha I guess it’d be kind of me to include the vehicle it came from! It was a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo.
